The Green Wall

The short stretch of fence that separates us from our direct neighbours (the ones that we’re attached to as we live in a semi-detached house) is known as the “green wall” and it really lives up to its name.

The jasmine in the middle is flanked by two young Phyllostachys Nigra (Black Bamboo). I think it’s quite lovely. The jasmine has not flowered well for several years but this is the first year that I have been able to place a chair against it and just smell their sweet scent in the air.

There is a red fence behind all that greenery and it becomes more prominent in the winter as the jasmine normally acts herbaceously and dies back as opposed to remaining evergreen. I’ll continue giving the jasmine a high Potash feed to encourage it to flower more so I can smell it a when I’m sat a little further away as opposed to being sat right underneath it.

I'm Sunil Patel, this is me. I created the Garden at 13 Broom Acres and I open it to visitors. I also bake and write blog posts giving a "behind the scenes" look into what it's like to maintain such a garden.

Visit the blog, then come and visit the garden. We can have a good sit-down, a jolly chinwag and a relaxing cup of tea with a sinfully generous slice of home made cake.

Sunil, I lived in the state of Florida for a couple of years, where jasmine grows enthusiastically, and I know how beautiful it must be to sit near such a fragrant wall! I love the foliage combination with the jasmine and bamboo — the kind that makes you stop and look twice to be sure what you’re seeing.

Hi Stacy, thanks, I like the foliage combination too. We’re getting a fair amount of flower on the jasmine considering how bad the weather has been. I’ve only been able to sit out and enjoy it twice since it’s normally raining (as it is now). I’m going to dump another load of Potash by the jasmine to encourage it to flower more. It only seems interested in green growth most of the time.
