My bird of paradise froze last year, but only on the stalks and leaves. The root balls look healthy. However, its not growing yet. What should I do?
Oh no, if the root ball is still alive, then it should re-grow from the roots. Put the plant in the warmest, sunniest spot you have and keep the soil moist, but not too wet – be careful not to over-water. It’s difficult to say if all the frost-blackened and damaged parts of the plant should be cut out. You can cut a mature plant to just 30cms above the soil if the damage is very severe and it should re-grow from that (this is how they are sold in Madeira). Good luck on your Strelitzia’s recovery, they are tough plants, but it will take time to re-grow so you’ll have to be patient.
